Jesus called Peter the rock on which he would build his church. Moments later he called him Satan. Blessed are you, Simon. Why? Peter had just recognized something extraordinary. Jesus was the Messiah, the son of the living God. But Jesus then revealed something Peter did not expect. The Messiah would suffer, be killed and rise again. Peter could not accept that man. He wanted to protect his master and tried to turn him away from the suffering ahead. Jesus answered with the words, get behind me, Satan, but he was confronting the thinking behind Peter's words. Peter was thinking according to human expectations, Jesus was following the father's will and the path of the cross. Later Jesus warned Peter that Satan wanted to sift the disciples like wheat, their faith would be tested. But Jesus also told Peter something remarkable. I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. Peter would fall. He would deny Jesus three times. Yet his failure would not be the end of his story. Jesus would restore him, giving the fallen disciple another opportunity to serve. Peter's story reminds us that even those who stumble can be restored.
