What happens in a brain on THC? I'm a neuroscientist. I'm going to explain what happens in a brain on THC. Marijuana's active ingredient, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), activates CB1/CB2 receptors in the brain and body. This stimulates the release of dopamine, slows time perception, and dilates blood vessels. The increased dopamine activity induces feelings of euphoria. THC activates the amygdala, which regulates feelings of fear. This makes some people feel anxious or paranoid. It also affects the hippocampus, which is important for memory processing, becoming less active, leading to short-term memory deficits. This decreases activation in the frontal lobe, leading to impaired judgment and reduced focus. THC activates the spinal cord and brainstem, which modulate pain perception and suppress feelings of pain. However, long-term use and dependency desensitizes dopamine circuits, decreasing things like motivation and drive over time. The Endocannabinoid System influences things like mood, memory, sleep, and motivation. Although THC has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, THC's anti-inflammatory, pain-suppressing, and appetite-stimulating effects can be extremely useful for those who need it.
