One ingredient I'll always make at home is vanilla. Grab a vodka, brandy, bourbon or rum of your choice and a vanilla bean to it. For every half cup of alcohol, use two to three vanilla beans. Make sure that the whole thing is submerged in the liquid. So I'm going to cut mine in half. Carefully split each half down the middle. I don't cut them fully in half, but I do give it a good split. Gather them up, plop them in. Give it a good shake. Try to remember to shake it at least once a week, or just whenever you remember it. I like to leave mine for at least eight months before I use it, but the longer the better. I bet you'll agree that this tastes and smells way better than the store-bought version.
